Free to Be You and Me

Had alcohol for the first time tonight. Legally, since it's six months past my 21st birthday, because I am such a straight-laced white hat on the issue. Just a half a glass of champagne, which was both better and worse than I thought it would be. Didn't taste particularly good (no surprise), but I finally understand the phraseology I've always heard/read used with regard to alcohol--that it goes down warm. Because it does, even though the bottle was cold, and isn't that an odd sensation to feel down your throat. Friend remarked that this was why she ended up drinking vodka at 6 AM in the freezing morning in Russia this past year, XD.
I think the resulting good feeling and ease of conversation was due to good company and fun circumstances, and perhaps the placebo effect, because I don't think even a first-timer like me can be much affected by half a glass of champagne, but all around it was a very enjoyable night.
On Supernatural 5x03, I could say more, but I'll (try to) be brief.
Castiel: I didn't particularly like the whorehouse and just pre-whorehouse scenes. Why would a stoic angel get nervous and fidgety when women are mentioned? He's an angel, sex is a human thing they are not generally concerned with. Also, though I like him picking up things from Dean, I was not really feeling his various uses of profanity.
I must admit, I loved Jerusalem summed up as "arid," "den of iniquity" and Cas reading the prostitute's past and ineptly trying to reassure her, that is a nice touch of angel-ness. I also adored his stint as an FBI agent, especially Dean straightening his clothes and tie, Cas holding the badge upside down, and Dean cutting Cas off every time he tried to say "demons." Oh you earnest cutie, I love you best when you are doing so badly at pretending to be human. No wait, I really love you best when you are being the completely inhuman, powerful, holy thing that you really are, but I'm still high off when you did that in 5x02, so it's all good. <3333
Dean: Aside from the awkward stuff with Cas in the whorehouse (OK I admit I loved seeing him laugh again), I loved Dean here, free of the burden of his codependency and truly independent for the first time (the relief of which he understandably mistakes as happiness;
vichan has articulated this much better than I ever could in one of her recent posts). I reiterate from previous posts, however, that Dean still loves Sam and always will, forever (most obvious thing ever), and that they will undoubtedly, eventually, get back together in a healthier relationship as brothers.)
Sam: Needs to learn how to say, "None of your freaking business, so lay off, you pushy, nosy broad," instead of trying to convey it via his facial expressions which the obnoxious girl with a crush on him is free to determinedly ignore. Also, I think Sam throwing straight bulls-eyes at darts is the hottest I have ever seen him, and that is damn hot, speaking as a person who is not generally attracted to Jared Padalecki. Sam, poor boy, I really felt for him this episode, what with "Jessica" haunting him and doing his best to keep himself away from demon blood temptation but having to deal with the guilt of not helping out with the apocalypse he started, and those hunters, and spitting out the blood, OMG!...Thoughts on Lucifer after Raphael.
Raphael: After all the buildup about how hard it would be to capture him I can't believe they just used the same old "HAH you just stepped into a Devil's Trap/circle of burning Special Oil that you didn't suspect was there!" shtick again. Um, why the heck didn't he just pop away as soon as the match was pulled out, people. Plotholes, how I hate thee. I did very much enjoy his whole insistence that God was dead, Lucifer probably raised Cas (such an intriguing idea, I really hope they go with that), and his whole mien when he went through the "children abandoned by Father, we're so tired, we just want it to be over" deal. Though I'm curious what the angels have been doing for the past 2,000 years that's so arduous, since they obviously haven't been walking the Earth. EDIT- On rewatch I actually really, really like Raphael and his actor. He put such emotion into his words, had tears in his eyes, and he was as scary intense as Castiel is, which I think is my favorite type of interpretation of angels. I mean, I adore Zachariah, as a character, meaning I love to hate him, but he seems a bit too human sometimes for me to pull off otherwordly angelness. Anyway, I hope we see Raph again soon! (Teeheehee I love when angels come with built-in diminutive nicknames)
Lucifer: 0_0 <33333 I LOVE MARK PELLEGRINO AS LUCIFER. I LOVE HIM. Oh God, he's so gentle and sad and exciting and creepy and persuasive and honest and beautiful and graceful and scary and implacable and...!!! This is actually, I think, the main reason why I'm not liking the fact that Nick is just Lucifer's backup-plan vessel (and...why does Michael not also have a backup-plan for when Dean is unavailable, grrah??) and that Sam is his real, ideal vessel. I mean, sure, I find the Sam'n'Dean symmetry interesting, intellectually, and it ties in with the rest of the mytharc quite well, but, um, honestly...I don't think Jared Padalecki will be able to portray the Lucifer with the characterization we've seen as well as Mark Pellegrino. Not even close. There, I said it, you can kill me now. I would be happy to be proved wrong (and I guess we'll see next Thursday, lol) I just think Mark's so perfect, he's got it so down. Jared can totally do the nasty, violent, very physical, badwrong!creepy...I don't know, that type very well (as we've seen when Sam's been possessed by Meg or in Dean's yellow-eyed hallucination), and it's not like I don't know he can do good, subtle acting, but now that I've seen Mark!Lucifer he's just it. He's Lucifer. THE END, for me. Not even Sam!Lucifer can match up, I would be very surprised to find otherwise.
I kind of liked it better when I was thinking of Sam as an Antichrist figure, separate from the actual devil and a power in his own right. Then again, it's the same with Dean and Michael, I would rather Dean be special as himself. I guess I would prefer if neither of the Winchesters were actual vessels, it just takes away so much of the interesting element of choice. I mean, right now the only real important choice they have that affects the Apocalypse is whether or not to say "yes" to their respective angels, but if they do they get obliterated, so...I don't know.
Well, that didn't really work out with my initial plan to keep it short. I am so full of fail.

Date: 2009-09-26 10:15 am (UTC)And anyway, Sam would be practically destroyed after being possessed by Lucifer (see Raphael's vessel), so my 2 cents are that Michael and Lucifer don't get their real vessels :)
Same as you for the whorehouse, but I think the scene in the alley with Dean laughing was worth it :D They were so adorable in that scene!
Anticlimatic Raphael...heh. I'm quite sure all the big fights and stuff will be anticlimatic from now on. Let's face, they haven't got the money.
If only they had some budget I think they'd come up with more ambitious scenes.

Date: 2009-09-26 09:49 pm (UTC)XD Yes, Dean cracking up and Cas smiling confusedly, happy that he made him laugh was pretty precious. That's the best smile we've seen out of Castiel so far!
I kind of really wanted to see battles like the cop/sheriff guy (who I really liked!) was describing, between angels and demons. (Although how are they dealing with that, when they've canonically established that only angels can kill other angels??) But yeah, budget. :(( I really loved the visual the guy described, of Raphael kneeling quiet and solemn amidst the devastated battlefield after the explosion of his grace.
